Roberto Mata is a well known veteran, when it comes to coffee in Costa Rica! He lives with his big family in San Marco de Dota, Tarrazu. There are all together 22 family members. He has 12 siblings, 5 children and 12 grandchildren. His daughter Monica was at 13 the youngest Barista in Costa Rica and studied food technology & nutrition. She helps him a lot and gives a lot of advises when it comes to new types of fermentation.

The Geisha variety has become a fixed institution in the world of high-end specialty coffee during the last decade. For instance, in the 2021 Costa Rica Cup Of Excellence 15 out 30 winning coffees were Geishas. This varietal is celebrated for its exceptional cup profile with intense floral notes combined with high sweetness and complex fruit notes like lime, peach or tropical fruits. On the other hand, those characteristics only show up, when this variety is grown in high altitudes. Since those trees do not have a high yield and need a lot of care, high quality Geisha coffees are still rare and sought-after.
Marcus from GOTA coffee experts Vienna is tasting Geisha cherries! The Geisha trees are still not at the height of their production capacity but in 2021 they gave enough cherries for around 700kg of green coffee. In his mill Roberto chose to process one part as yellow honey and one part as red honey to find out how the flavor will be. On the cupping table in Roberto’s laboratory the Geisha showed clean floral notes of jasmine and lavender, stone fruits like peach and apricot as well as notes of blackberries and sweet, almost lemonade-like citric notes. We visited his farm in 2022 and met him just before Geisha harvest started. They were delicious.
Traveling like real tourists :) It wasn't so easy to reach the Geishas and SL 28 at 1900msl. Great fun for our expert team.

Der Geisha von Roberto Mata aus der Region San Marcos de Tarrazú ist einer der bekanntesten Kaffees in Costa Rica.
Wir haben uns die Ernte aus 2022 gesichert weil das Cupping vor Ort uns keine andere Wahl gelassen hat. Ein eindeutiger Gewinner! Roberto wird mit dieser Geisha auch zur „Cup of excellence“ 2022 antreten.

The Geisha of Roberto Mata from the region of San Marcos de Tarrazú is one of the most famous coffees in Costa Rica.
We secured the harvest from 2022 because the cupping on site left us no other choice. A clear winner! Roberto will also compete with this Geisha for the "Cup of excellence" 2022.

Las Nubes ("Die Wolken") ist die höchstgelegene Farm der Erzeuger Roberto Mata und seines Sohnes Michael. Mit einer Höhe von 1930 m scheint der Gipfel dieses 4 Hektar großen Betriebs tatsächlich bis in die Wolken zu reichen, mit Blick auf Santa Maria und das Tal von Dota. Hier baut die Familie Mata verschiedene Rebsorten wie Caturra, Catuaí, SL28 und Geisha an. Wir hatten die Ehre, diese erstaunliche Farm im Februar zusammen mit der ganzen Familie Mata zu besuchen.

Las Nubes (“The Clouds”) is the highest farm of producers Roberto Mata and his son Michael. At 1930m the peak of this 4 hectares large farm indeed seems to reach the clouds, overlooking Santa Maria and the valley of Dota. Here the Mata family grows several varietals like Caturra, Catuaí, SL28 and Geisha. We had the honor to visit this amazing farm in February together with the whole Mata family.
Processing
45 hours of pre-fermentaion in sun, followed by pulping and 30 days of honey process on African beds on his own micro-mill.
Cupping Notes
Clean floral notes of jasmine and lavender, stone fruits like peach and apricot as well as notes of blackberries and sweet, almost lemonade-like citric notes.
